The 9th annual Sanctuary Cove Ladies Golf Classic got underway on Sunday 15 March 2020 with three days of golf and evening events.
The Pines golf course welcomed 108 ladies for the first day of play from 34 golf clubs from around Australia. The ladies eased into the three-day event playing a 4-Person Ambrose with friends and making new ones along the way. The tricky windy conditions didn’t stop the ladies from enjoying The Pines golf course.
Following golf, the ladies went to the Clubhouse for cold beverages and canapés on Lakeview Terrace and were treated to live music from the D’Nossa Duo. First-day prizes were presented to the winners Deb Newton, Lee Clarke, Louise Hyaman and Sarah Hornery on a fantastic score of 59 ¼ nett, winning by more than 3 shots.
Day two of the Sanctuary Cove Ladies Golf Classic was the first round of the Single Stableford competition played over two days on The Palms and The Pines golf courses. All players were competing for the major prize of a diamond-studded putter.
The sun was shining on The Palms golf course but the wind continued to make conditions tricky. There were six players within 4 shots of the lead after day one with no players breaking their handicap. Sanctuary Cove’s own Catherine Irwin led day one with a great score of 36 points, one point ahead of another Sanctuary Cove local Marian Towler on 35 points. There were another five players within 4 shots of the lead across the three divisions.
As the sun set, the ladies returned to Lakeview Bar for the event’s formal dinner, a three-course meal designed by Head Chef Bryce Faull. The day’s presentations were awarded as dinner was enjoyed by all and drinks flowed throughout the evening. Jody and Sara from Brown Suga Duo treated the ladies to a night of singing and dancing the night away.
The Pines golf course hosted the final round of the Single Stableford event. Again, the wind was making the golf challenging but the ladies enjoyed the afternoon on the golf course while soaking up the Gold Coast sunshine.
At the evening’s buffet and presentation dinner, the winner of the coveted diamond-studded putter and Sanctuary Cove Ladies Golf Classic trophy was announced. During the event, the ladies helped raise $1,594 through a raffle, for which prizes were kindly donated. This money will be proudly donated to the Institute for Glycomics at Griffith University to help in their work towards fighting diseases of global impact.
The overnight leaders from day one were the ones to chase on day two with plenty of ladies in contention to be crowned the Ladies Golf Classic winner. After two consistent days of golf, Wantima’s Denise Semple finished one shot clear on 65 points from Amanda Gillis from Avondale Golf Club and Marian Towler from Sanctuary Cove. The division one winner was Sanctuary Cove’s Margie Hay on 61 points, four points clear from Sarah Khouri from Pacific Golf Club. Division two was won by Alexis Glendinning from Southport Golf Club on a countback from Ann Glasson from Pymble Golf Club on 61 points. The division three winner was Marian Towler from Sanctuary Cove on 64 points who was one point clear from Catherine Irwin from Sanctuary Cove.
