The Club is proud to announce that over $45,000 was raised for Cancer Council from The Longest Day event on Tuesday 8 December 2020. Congratulations once again to the 21 participants who completed the challenge and thank you to everyone who supported the cause.
During this event, a Members-only team led by Japan Tour Player Anthony Quayle took on the Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club staff team. The Members’ team included Anthony Quayle, Elvis Smylie, Shannon Moore, Glen Thomson, Shirley Dean, Audy White, Clayton Glenister, Chris Smith, John Scerri, Rob Lane, Paul Smerdon and John Walter. Led by Paul Sanders, the Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club staff team included Ryan Gailey, Tim Bray, Mitchell Smith, Ashleigh Blacksell and Laura Liebenau. AFL stars Daniel Rich and Luke Hodge, as well as European Tour player Jake McLeod joined the Members and staff for the event.
With all groups teed off by 5am, the first two rounds were completed before noon. Following a short break and a change of groups, players embarked on the third round despite a few first aches and pains setting in. With a final change of groups and all players determined to complete the challenge, the last round commenced with a growing crowd on the first tee to show their support.
After 12 hours and walking up to 45 kilometres, players were truly carried by the unwavering support shown by a large group of spectators waiting on the 18th green until the last putt was made.
Notwithstanding the day’s cause and its success to raise awareness and funds for the Cancer Council, the extraordinary golf played by some contenders cannot be overseen. Member Anthony Quayle shot a staggering 21-under par over the four rounds, with amateur Elvis Smylie finishing on a remarkable 16-under par.
The event would not have been as successful without the continued support of caddies and spectators from the first to the fourth round, not to mention the staff who continually supplied the players with snacks, meals and drinks throughout the day. Finally, a sincere thank you to all who have been so generous with their donations, allowing us to raise over $40,000 in support of the Cancer Council. Thank you!
Congratulations again to all players who completed this extraordinary challenge, a feat to be truly proud of.
