The Pines Golf Course Annual Renovations

The annual renovations on The Pines commenced on Monday 31 October, being the first full course renovation since the greens’ reconstruction. This year’s program for the greens will differ to other years, as the greens will only require a light renovation due to their age.

More energy and resources will be put into tees, fairways and aprons. These areas will receive a heavy renovation due to the amount of thatch accumulation from the rainfall and after only undergoing a minor renovation earlier this year.

Greens

  • Verti-cut at -1mm in two directions (matt and thatch removal)
  • Aerate with 10mm solid tines (provides a corridor for oxygen in the root zone)
  • Apply soil amendments (helps to correct any short falls in the greens’ soil profile)
  • Heavily top dress with amended sand (assists in evening out any imperfections with the playing surface)
  • Fertilise with Turf Starter at 3kg/100m2 (helps with turf recovery and vigour)

The estimated recovery time of the greens is 2 to 4 weeks.

Tees

  • Scarify at -20mm in two directions (matt and thatch removal)
  • Aerate with 12mm hollow tines (provides a corridor for oxygen in the root zone and removes thatch)
  • Heavily top dress with amended sand (assists in evening out any imperfections with the playing surface)
  • Fertilise with Turf Starter at 3kg/100m2 (helps with turf recovery and vigour)

Fairways

  • Scarify at -20mm in two directions (matt and thatch removal)
  • Aerate with 12mm hollow tines (provides a corridor for oxygen in the root zone and removes thatch)
  • Top dress with amended sand at 5-7mm (assist in evening out any imperfections with the playing surface)
  • Fertilise with Turf Starter at 3kg/100m2 (helps with turf recovery and vigour)

The tees’ and fairways’ estimated recovery time is 4 to 6 weeks. On re-opening after three weeks, these surfaces, having been heavily renovated, will be back to 50-60% of their normal condition subject to weather.
