Easter Tournament Overview

The 2023 Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club Easter Tournament began on Good Friday with the Walker Cup being played on The Pines golf course. Golfers competed in the 4-Person Ambrose which was first played on Good Friday in 1990 and initiated by Mr Keith Walker and his friends. The event has remained as one of the most anticipated events on the golfing calendar with 148 players seeking to add their names to this year’s Walker Cup winners board. The cloudy and overcast weather didn’t affect the fun shared by Members throughout the day, especially that of this year’s winners with a fine score 53.875 net. Congratulations to the team of Troy Devine, Glen Thomson, and Fletcher and Hayley Sewell. The Club was fortunate enough to have Mr Keith Walker onsite to present the trophy to the winning team.

Easter Monday saw a record field of 114 Members and guests play The Jabiru Cup on The Pines golf course. A sunny and windy autumn day greeted golfers making for a perfect end to the 2023 Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club Easter Tournament.

Wayne Kirby fired a superb 41 points to win the men’s individual stableford and Judy Coote had a fantastic score of 41 points to win the ladies’ event.

The Jabiru Cup format is a random draw with four Members selected and the best three scores are counted on the day. This year’s winning team was Keith Coleman, Brian Armstrong, Kirsten Ellingford and Wayne Kirby with a score of 105 points.

Congratulations to Louise Wolbers who had a hole in one on the 7th hole of The Pines golf course during the Sunday Social Easter Skins event.

With over 70 children participating in the egg hunt, it was an EGG-cellent morning, as they searched for egg tokens and filled their baskets with chocolate eggs and bunnies. The Easter hunt is a wonderful chance for Sanctuary Cove residents to engage with the Club and our Members with each year being a sell-out event. To view images from the day, please click here.

Checking in prior to Playing

Members are reminded to please ensure you are booked in on the tee sheet when playing golf. If you go out late afternoon, please either check in at the golf shop or phone to check in so the staff can put your name on the tee sheet.

If your name is not on the tee sheet, we don’t know you are on the course, which could present complications if an incident was to occur.

We appreciate your support on this matter.

Golf Buggy Parking – Porte-Cochère

Members are reminded that parking is not permitted under the porte-cochère at the Clubhouse main entrance unless in an allocated parking space.

Golf buggy parking is available in front of the golf shop and in the designated Clubhouse entrance cart park.

Your cooperation and understanding of these guidelines are appreciated, so as to not jeopardise the Club’s ability to accommodate emergencies such as fire and ambulance arrivals.

We thank you for your support on this matter.

Members’ Working Group

The Members’ Working Group is a group of Members who volunteer their time to assist the Golf Course Maintenance team with various tasks on and around the golf courses.

The Members’ Working Group meets fortnightly on Tuesdays, and we invite any Members interested in helping to contact Gary Simmons.

History of The Palms Golf Course

The Palms was designed and constructed by Fred Bolton and opened in 1988. It was an integral part of the Mike Gore dream.

Fred Bolton was an American professional golfer, who became involved in golf course architecture in the 1960s. He came to Australia in the 1970s working for Jack Nicklaus on the Australian Golf Course. He never went back to the USA, married an Australian and moved to the Gold Coast in the 80s. He had a hand in a number of Gold Coast golf courses including Arundel, Gainsborough Greens and Surfers Paradise.

The Palms, along with The Pines (1989), became the golfing centrepiece of Sanctuary Cove especially for public and corporate golf. When Sanctuary Cove went into administration in the early 1990s, The Palms was neglected to some extent.

Its redesign became one of the major features of the sale of all Sanctuary Cove golf assets via Prospectus to the Members (and the public) by Mulpha (MSCD) in 2007.

Renowned Australian golf course architect Ross Watson developed The Palms golf course masterplan under which The Palms was to be upgraded and remodelled in three stages, each dependent on different funding streams. Stage 1 was to start before 2009.

The new routing provided for the 1st tees of both The Pines and The Palms to be adjacent to one another and the planned new Clubhouse.

The new Club Board decided that the upgrading of the old Country Club should be delayed until after the redesigned The Palms was complete, so work commenced on The Palms in 2008. The Club’s own staff were employed by Ross Watson to assist, and the Club engaged its own Project Manager. Cost overruns associated with the new Clubhouse and deferrals of government legislative changes contributed to delayed completion of The Palms – eventually opening in April 2011.

The new course, par 70 and relatively short, being so different to The Pines, proved challenging for Members and the public alike. The different surfaces of the greens, their size and undulations together with the typical ‘Ross Watson’ bunkering were especially difficult for those used to The Pines, an Arnold Palmer style and finish.

A few superficial changes have been made to the course over the last ten years but its need for good course management has been retained.

The current Club Board has indicated that The Palms will be undergoing an enhancement plan, commencing this year.
