Message from our Golf Course Superintendent

Cameron Smith, Golf Course Superintendent

Another challenging end to the week saw more than 60mm of rain fall across the courses. With the ground already saturated, water levels have risen in areas not seen for some time. Fortunately, ahead of the weather we were able to mow both courses and apply additional fertility to fairway areas weakened by winter shade and excess moisture. Storm-damaged tree removals have again been delayed, but will be rescheduled as soon as conditions allow.

On The Palms golf course, hole 3 is progressing well, with turf establishing as expected and only landscape planting left to complete. Hole 10 is also taking shape, with rough contours and preliminary bunker forms now in place. In the coming weeks, we anticipate completing the rock walls around the lakes and commencing irrigation installation.

This week, the maintenance team completed the following:

  • Applied fungicide and wetting agent to greens on both The Pines and The Palms golf courses

  • Mulched the garden on the left-hand side of the 3rd hole on The Palms golf course

  • Applied granular fertiliser to the new Zoysia turf area on the 3rd hole of The Palms golf course

  • Performed solid tine aeration on tees and weak or shaded areas of the fairways on The Pines golf course

  • Applied gypsum to weak or shaded areas of the fairways on The Pines golf course

  • Trimmed drain pits along the path edges on The Pines golf course

  • Completed detail work on the driving range at The Pines golf course, including trimming and spraying the bunker edges

  • Mowed the new 3rd tee and fairway on The Palms golf course to 18mm

  • Cleared and mulched tree debris from the 10th hole of The Palms golf course

Next week, the following will be addressed:

  • Herbicide will be applied to the fairways on The Palms golf course

  • Needle tine aeration will be performed on the greens of The Pines golf course
  • Irrigation boxes will be trimmed on The Pines golf course
  • Ventrac mulching will continue on the forest floors of The Pines golf course
  • Foliar fertiliser will be applied to the driving range fairway on The Pines golf course
  • Bunkers on The Pines golf course will be trimmed and detailed
  • Detail work will continue on the driving range at The Pines golf course, targeting greens and associated areas
