Message from our Golf Course Superintendent

Cameron Smith, Golf Course Superintendent

Despite the wet weather this week, the GCM team has remained extremely productive. With The Palms golf course closed on Monday, the team took the opportunity to verticut and topdress the greens, further enhancing their already impressive recovery. This process helps limit vertical turf growth and promotes lateral spread, resulting in increased density and faster overall improvement.

Several palm trees were also relocated, including transplants around the 15th and the movement of those from the 18th fairway into the new 16th tee complex. These adjustments will allow the team to refine contour mowing, extend fairway cuts around the palms, and improve areas that have not met our standards in recent years.

In addition, a calcium-based fertiliser is being applied to the tees, fairways, and green surrounds on The Palms golf course. This treatment will support soil aeration and assist in managing sodium accumulation associated with irrigation water.

The Pines golf course continues to be in excellent condition ahead of next week’s Sanctuary Cove Legends Pro-Am. Green speeds have been slightly slower following the recent rain, however with a more favourable forecast ahead, the team expects them to return to the tournament-level standards consistently delivered over the past few months.

This week, the maintenance team completed the following:

  • Verticut and applied a light topdress to the greens on The Palms golf course
  • Applied gypsum to the fairways, tees, and aprons on The Palms golf course
  • Oversaw palm tree transplanting on holes 14, 15, 17, and 18 on The Palms golf course, completed by contractors
